About Paphos, Cyprus
Paphos (Pafos) is renowned for its archaeological treasures and is the legendary birthplace of Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty. Situated on the South-West coast of the island and sheltered from the north by the Troodos mountains, Paphos enjoys the healthiest year round climate in the Mediterranean.
The countryside is serenely beautiful throughout the year with fertile plains, citrus fruit plantations, rocky coves, sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters.
The town is split into upper and lower Paphos, known as Kitma and Kato Paphos. The lower part, on the coast, contains most of the historic sites whereas the upper town contains the main commercial centre, shops and modern museums. The lower town contains a number of archaeological sites. Some are in the formal areas, but you might come across ancient ruins among modern houses. The harbour is the focus of the lower town and is a pleasant place to stroll. Cafes string out along the seafront and there are plenty of places to eat or drink.
Paphos harbour with its ancient castle, its mosaics depicting Dionysos the God of wine, beautiful churches and old monasteries antiquities, has prompted UNESCO to include Paphos in its world cultural heritage list.
Paphos with its security, its pleasant hospitality and its marvelous archaeological treasures and ancient legends, is a thriving coastal city. The authorities have invested heavily in irrigation dams and water distribution works, road infrastructure and the development of Paphos International Airport.
